LEARNING AGREEMENT

1. THE CHOSEN SITE & RESEARCH TOPIC/ISSUES YOU WISH TO STUDY
Area of Research: Malaysia Wooden Architecture

At present, Malaysia's self-built building structure is still brick and concrete structure, reinforced concrete structure, and steel structure, etcetera. Especially the high degree of awareness of the concrete structure, and think that the wood structure is not strong, there are fire, moisture, and other constraints. With the development of society, we gradually gave up the ancients experienced hundred of years of wisdom of the crystallization. However, the wood structure has been applied to some low-rise residential and tourism buildings, in other types of construction applications is almost a blank. So the aim of this report is to study the regression and innovation of local architecture resource and investigate that is it possible to fully use wood as a building material the future development of buildings in Malaysia.

  • To find out why wooden architecture are slowly being abandon in Malaysia
  •  To find out the issues that caused wooden architecture in Malaysia to be unpopular.
  • To find out the cultural background factors that have influenced the use of timber.
  • Strategies to revitalize people to the use of timber as a building material in Malaysia.
  • To discuss the technological developments that have contributed the structural use of timber in Malaysia.
  • To study the regression and innovation of local architecture resource
  • Case study will focus on old kampung house and modern wood architecture in Malaysia.

2. OUTLINE OF REPORT AND HOW YOU WISH TO CARRY OUT YOUR OBJECTIVES
Chapter 1:Introduction This chapter will introducing general information about timber used in Malaysia’s architecture

  • Aim & Objective
    • Aim: To study the regression and innovation of local architecture resource, finding out why wooden architecture is slowly being abandoned, and let people re- understand the wooden building and its technological development.
    • Objective: To promote people's understanding of wood construction, raise concern and usage of wooden buildings and to improve the living environment, to revitalize environmental awareness.

Chapter 2: The history of wooden architecture in Malaysia
This chapter will analysing the evolution of timber buildings in Malaysia from indigenous shelters to contemporary architecture.

  • In the field of traditional wood construction, some case study has been found to show that some architectural forms, from a structural point of view, are initially influenced by existing building materials available.
  • This information will provide public with the knowledge to use wood as a natural resource in an appropriate manner so as to link our cultural, traditional and social values from the past to present
  • Case study: kampung house in Malacca & Reclaimed Telegraph Pole House in Langkawi

Chapter 3: Factors that have influenced the use of timber
This chapter will discuss the issues that caused wooden architecture in Malaysia to be unpopular.

  • Environmental factors
    • Malaysia's weather has long led to unstable wood construction
    • The quality and quantity of Malaysian timber are not sufficient for development and use.
    • Case study: abandon wooden resort in lang tengah island

  • Economy Factor
    • Durability: People think that woodenly building is perishable and unsuitable for longterm residence
    • Timber production cost: The amount of wood that can be used is small, causing the price to be pushed higher than other material so that people are refusing the use of wood as a building material.  Survey Data collected from public

  • Social & Cultural Factor
    •  Environmental awareness: Most people think that cutting down trees as building materials are destroying nature.
    • The pursuit of progress, ideological & aesthetic differences: It is generally believed that simple concrete, tiles, steel, and glass are suitable for modern living conditions than wood, and are more in line with the aesthetic of young people.
    • Survey data collected from public

Chapter 4:Technological developments & solutions
This chapter will discuss the technological development that has contributed the structural use of timber. And find out the strategies to revitalize people to the use of timber as a building material in Malaysia.
Technological Development

  • Case study: Case studies of the two buildings show the differences in the development of Wood Building Construction Technology.
    • Fully Handmade Wooden Architecture: Rudinara, a handmade wooden house in Bangi, Selangor
    • New Technology and Reuse of Wood: Reclaimed Telegraph Pole House,Langkawi
  • Survey data collected frompublic
  • Interview(MTC/ Timber Supplier)

Adapting the possible strategies on revitalizing and promoting wooden architecture in Malaysia’s context

  • Timber architecture conference and seminars which allowed the public to listen and learning,re-understanding wooden architecture.
  • Environmental issue: take the tree planting and development strategy
  • A large number of trees can be planted so that Malaysia has a long-term supply of timber.
  • Using wood in multi-functions
  • Governmental support to promote wood construction
  • Safety of wooden architecture

Chapter 5:Conclusion
Recap the ideas of overall research project and summarize the possibility of using wood as a building material in the development of future buildings in Malaysia. Recap the ideas of overall research project.

3. RESEARCH PLAN AND METHODOLOGY
The research of the project will be carried by spending a few days at the specific location to study the culture and the lifestyle of those who lived in wooden building. Survey and interview will be conduct in order to get feedback from public and information collecting. Books and online article information will be use for the case study of the overseas wooden building. The issue that will be investigated is the possibility to fully use wood as a building material the future development of buildings in Malaysia.
